Oct. 16 - Made in India

It's been revealing to see how many items say "Made in India" - carried home five items for the house from my mall trip yesterday, each made here - two cooking pans, a pot holder, thank you cards, a tablet for keeping track of taxi fares & Ponds glycerin soap. Next time I go to the mall I'm going to make a mock list of the non-perishables I'd shop for in a week in Minneapolis to compare how many daily use items are "home grown".

Was also pleasantly surprised to see that technology, engineering & design do make a difference, considering I'm here to find ways for STEM - science, technology, engineering & math - to be utilized in students daily lives to find unique solutions to problems. I'd been using the cookware the landlord provided, knowing they were not top notch, but served their purpose. Six weeks into the process, with me doing quite a bit more cooking, & looking into the future as people start to join me, meaning I'll be in the kitchen even more, I just couldn't make due with a tiny, aluminum sauce pan & small fry pan any longer. The new pans are non-stick, much thicker & said on the label that they were designed to spread the heat from a gas burner more evenly, decreasing cooking time by up to half. I was dubious...so I tried a little experiment. I did my usual habit in the morning - wake up, put on water for coffee, open the windows, light the incense & return to the kitchen to stir in Sanka. (Yes, I miss my fresh ground coffee...seems like a fair trade off, though, I keep reminding myself.) I didn't get through opening the bathroom windows when I heard a pop, pop from the kitchen, ran in & water was jumping over the lip of the pot!
